BURGESS TREBLE SETTLES CUP DERBY
Division 1 leaders, Frys B, crashed out of the Restricted Cup 6-3 to Key Centre A. Keith Burgess was Key Centre’s man of the match defeating Bryan Taylor in straight games and Roy Smith in four games before sealing the victory with a four game win against Fred Martin. Earlier in the evening Mike Jago had inflicted on Martin his first defeat of the season at this level before recording a surprising comfortable victory over Smith. Key Centre are joined in the semi final by Mayfield B who came through a tricky looking tie away to Division 2 outfit Bathford B. The hosts’ only success came when Jules Truss beat Bob Griffiths 11-8 in the fifth game of the evening’s second set. Nigel Woolley and Reg Morris both registered maximum for Mayfield.
The surprise result in the last eight of the Handicap Cup came at Manvers Street where Oldfield B, finalists in the past two seasons, crashed out to Division 2 side Ensleigh B. A 10 point advantage appeared challenging to the hosts’ trio of Terry Sloper, Ian Clark and Ping Zhang but they took the opening four sets in the deciding game before going on to whitewash their Premier division opponents. A 7 point handicap could not stop Steve Safrany recording a maximum for Bathford A in their 7-2 win at home to Newbridge Civil Service. Safrany conceded only 26 points during his three sets while Matt Lloyd and Steve Husbands weighed in with two wins each. Dave Hogg’s brace was best for Service. Oldfield C, also conceding 7 points, eased through to the last four with a 5-4 win against their G team clubmates. Paul Redman and Mike Noel won two sets each for the C, performances matched by the G team’s Mike Newton and Toffs Newton but it was Nigel Dagger’s win over Stuart Neathey in the fourth set of the evening which tipped the balance in the C team’s favour.
Mayfield A reached the semi final of the Knock Out Cup when defeating Newbridge B 8-1. Bob Murray and Ian Chislett were both unbeaten for the Oldfield Park side while the visitors’ only success came when Dave Walton defeated Chris Dunn in straight games. A hat trick from John Higgs was the deciding factor in Oldfield A’s 5-4 win away to Newbridge A.
In the Premier division, leaders Prattens Wildcatz extended their lead at the top of the table with a comprehensive 10-0 whitewashing of Frys A. Dave Harvey, Alex Kearney and Dan Kolesnic were the successful trio. In Division 1, the Chippenham derby went the way of Westinghouse C despite a Mark Terrell hat trick for the D team. Andy Funnell and Paul Vincent won two sets each for the C team.
