SAFRANY STARS IN BATHFORD CUP WIN

A maximum from Steve Safrany gave Bathford A (pictured left) a narrow 5-4 win against Ensleigh B in the final of the Handicap Cup at Batheaston Youth Club.  Conceding nine points, Safrany defeated Ping Zhang in three games in the opening set of the evening before Ensleigh hit back with victories by Terry Sloper and Ian Clark over Steve Husbands and Matt Lloyd respectively.  The match then see-sawed with Bathford leading 3-2 thanks to victories from Husbands and Safrany before Sloper and Clark again registered wins to put the Manvers Street side 4-3 up.  Lloyd then gained a crucial straight game win over Zhang to leave Safrany to defeat Sloper 21-17, 21-17 in the final set of the evening to seal a superb victory.

The Restricted Cup final proved somewhat of an anti climax as Key Centre A emerged comfortable 5-0 victors against Oldfield D.  The Keynsham trio of Keith Hunt, Keith Burgess and Mike Jago put some indifferent recent league performances behind them as they dropped only three games before lifting the trophy.

Key Centre A made it a league and cup double when Frys B failed to secure the necessary ten points from their visit to St Barnabas A in the final Division 1 fixture of the season.  Frys did however record an impressive 8-2 victory thanks to hat tricks from Bryan Taylor and Martin Moore, both defeating Keith Holland who had previously lost only two sets.

In Division 2, Ensleigh B (left) gained some consolation for their Handicap Cup Final defeat when beating Bathford C 9-1 which was enough to secure the runners up spot behind Newbridge F.  Ian Clark and Ping Zhang were both unbeaten for Ensleigh while Terry Sloper’s only loss came at the hands of Jules Truss in four games.
