BATH & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
REPORT & RESULTS – WEEK ENDING 14 MARCH 2008
by Bob Murray
CRAIG TREBLE DOWNS BATHFORD
A John Craig maximum steered Newbridge E to a narrow 6-4 victory over Bathford D in Division 2. Craig dropped only one game, to John Holding, in recording his tenth maximum of the season whilst Holding defeated both Peter Harris and John Woodman in four games. It was a good week for Holding who was a member of the Bathford C trio who won 10-0 away St Barnabas C to put them into contention for second place. Russell Cole and Jules Truss made up the winning side. Second place is currently occupied by Twerton St Michaels who emerged comfortable 8-2 victors from their home clash with Batheaston. Mark Creedon with three wins was supported by two wins each from James Stone and Peter Smith while Chris Rudd ‘s brace was best for the visitors. Ensleigh B could mount a late challenge for honours having played four matches less than the leading sides. Terry Sloper was their man of the match in the 8-2 win over Newbridge Civil Service while Ping Zhang and David Hockney weighed in with two wins each.
In the Premier division, a maximum from John Higgs proved the difference in Oldfield B’s 6-4 win away to Westinghouse B. Teammate Den Coombe’s two wins included a 12-10 fifth game win against Steve Deeble although he fell in four games to Jim Wheeler. Prattens Wildcatz have taken over at the top of the table following a 9-1 win away to Newbridge B. The hosts’ only success came when Michelle Leonard defeated Steve Kearney in five games. Alex Kearney and Nick Branch were both unbeaten. A straight game maximum from Peter Galea was the highlight of Ensleigh A’s 6-4 win away to Oldfield C.
The surprise result of the week came in Division 1 where struggling Bathford B were 6-4 winners at home to Westinghouse C. Joshua Kashdan, for the second successive week, put in an outstanding performance for the hosts defeating the experienced Chippenham trio of Andy Funnell, Paul Vincent and Graham Akerman. A double from Vincent was best for Westinghouse. Larkhall were impressive 7-3 winners away to St Barnabas A. The home side’s Keith Holland lost only his second set of the season when going down to Steve Phillips in five games.
